3M Atemschutzmasken sind für Einsatzbereiche mit erhöhtem Infektionsrisiko bzw. bei Gefährdung der Atemwege vorgesehen. Die Atemschutzmasken sind entsprechend der europäischen Norm EN 149 in die Schutzstufen FFP1, FFP2 und FFP3 klassifiziert. So wird zum Beispiel durch die Deutsche Gesellschaft der Krankenhaushygiene (DGKH) der Einsatz von Atemschutzmasken der Schutzstufe FFP2 zur Infektionsverhütung bei Tuberkulosefällen empfohlen. Das Berufsgenossenschaftliche Institut für Arbeitssicherheit (BIA) empfiehlt generell als Schutz vor Bakterien, Pilze und Sporen den Einsatz von Atemschutzmasken der Schutzstufe FFP2, gegen Viren der Schutzstufe FFP3.
